Chapter Eighteen

Madge held the ring so tightly it almost cut into her palm. Tiger Lily paced in front of her, a jungle cat eyeing its prey.

“I’m not doing anything,” Madge said, “especially not for my kidnapper.”

Tiger Lily smiled. “What loyalty do you have to Pan? Did he not kidnap you as well?”

Madge wasn’t sure. She agreed to come, right? But he’d lied, or not exactly lied, but didn’t tell her about her mother. She slid the ring onto her thumb—a perfect fit.

“Elder took you to the cemetery,” Tiger Lily said. “What did he tell you?”

“That my mother killed herself.”

She nodded. “And you don’t believe that.”

“I don’t.”

“Good. Because though she may have been the one to use the knife, Pan pushed her to do it.”

“How does a boy convince a woman to kill herself? It doesn’t make sense. He’s just a kid.”

“Pan may be a boy in body, but he is a demon in soul. His games are fueled by bloodlust. His boys murder and maim for fear of their own lives. Even his lieutenant is not safe. Pan cares for no one except himself, and damn anyone who gets in his way.” Tiger Lily picked up a knife from her table. The blade glinted in the sunlight that shone through gaps in the walls. “When my father was chief of the Red Men, he watched Pan slaughter our hunters for sport, and yet he did nothing. We tear our flesh from our bodies so that the smoke might shield us as we move from place to place. But this is Pan’s island. You can’t hide from him here. We can’t leave. So I’ve made the decision my father couldn’t. Pan must die, and you must be the one to do it.”

Madge’s stomach turned. “Why?”

Tiger Lily snatched her hand with inhuman speed, stroking the opal with her finger. “Because you are a Darling. Pan has a weakness for your family.”

“And why is that my problem? I came here to find my mother. I found her. There’s nothing left for me here. I’m going home. You can deal with him on your own.”

Tiger Lily twisted Madge’s wrist, and she cried out.

“How do you expect to leave? Pan is the only person who can leave this island voluntarily. It obeys him. You’re trapped, and you will do it.”

“But I can’t,” Madge said. “I won’t.”

She blinked, and the knife was at her throat. Tiger Lily’s face was close enough to kiss, her breath rancid from the green liquid.

“You will kill Pan, Darling. Or I will kill you.”
